BILL FANNING (Lotus Cortina 1598 cc)

Caught in a classic four-wheel drift, Bill Fanning slings the Lotus Cortina through the Esses at Warwick Farm in a bid to keep up with the more modern and powerful cars of 1970. (Photograph by Nigel Foote)

The GT & Lotus Cortinas live fondly in the memories of the Baby Boomer generation, but apart from winning the Australian Touring Car Championship (ATCC) in 1964 in the gifted hands of Pete Geoghegan, the cars never quite lived up to expectations once the thunder of the Mustangs arrived. But like the Mini Coopers, they could snap at the heels of the larger cars under brakes, on circuits like Oran Park and Warwick Farm.
